Step 1: Using the embroidery hoop as a guide, cut out a rough circle shape out of the plain pink Verona pink fat quarter and one out of the fusible fleece. Fuse the fleece to the fabric using a dry iron.

Step 2: Cut out your chosen fabric pieces from the Verona pink and lilac fat quarters, iron on the bondaweb. Using the baking template out of the magazine pack, draw around and cut out your chosen shapes: cake stand, 2 large cupcakes, 2 small cup cakes

Step 3: Using a heat erasable pen, draw around the inside of the embroidery hoop onto your main fabric panel. Using the edge of your sewing machine foot as a guide, stitch around the circle with a decorative stitch and machine embroidery thread. Different sewing machines have different stitches: find one that you like best, this one was a star stitch.

Step 4: Using a free-motion foot, stitch around the edge of the appliqué to define the cake stand and cakes. Adding extra detail such as swirls on the icing or the pleats on the cake case adds a great effect and further dimension.

Step 5: Using a heat erasable pen, write your text onto the fabric: “Enjoy life…eat cake!” Using two strands of cotton, stitch over your text with a backstitch. Using a variegated thread gives a different effect and blends in well with the variations of colour in the appliqué.

Step 6: Using needle and strong thread, stitch a running stitch around the edge of your circle of fabric. Position the embroidery hoop in place, pull the thread to gather in the edges then when happy with positioning, tighten up the screw on the hoop.

Step 7: Using the Collall textile glue, adhere the gathered edge of the fabric to the reverse side of the embroidery hoop. Hold in place using quilt clips until glue is set.

Step 8: Trace around the embroidery hoop onto a piece of coordinating felt. Cut out the circle and glue to the reverse of the hoop to conceal all of the workings.

Step 9: Attach a ribbon bow and hanging loop to complete your project.
