Fabric bowl cover

Crafter's Companion – 07/12/19

All the houses have their lights up, the trees are adorned in decorations and the shops are full of Christmas food – we’re definitely in the festive season now! Make sure that you prepare for the cooking on your big day with this fabric bowl cover project. These covers can be created to fit any size bowl, so you can cover any of your foods for safe keeping.

While we love the blue, yellow and white fabric used in this project, you can use Christmas fat quarters to add a fun, festive touch. Of course, if you’d like to make covers for all year round, you can also opt for your other fabric favourites.

You will need:

  • Selection of fat quarters
  • 1/4″ wide elastic
  • Scissors
  • Fabric marking pen
  • Tape measure
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Safety pin
  • Pinking shears

Cutting instructions

  • One fabric circle for each bowl over (see below for information)
  • Use a 0.6cm (0.25″) seam allowance throughout the project

Step 1

Iron fabric flat and lay on cutting mat with wrong side facing up.

Step 2

Position bowl upside down on to the fabric.

Step 3

Measure 2″ away from the bowl edge and mark around the circumference.

Step 4

Remove the bowl and connect marks to give a drawn circle 2″ bigger than the bowl.

Step 5

Cut out the fabric circle using pinking shears to prevent the edges from fraying.

Step 6

Fold the edge over 1/2″ and pin in place.

Step 7

Stitch around the finished edge of the circle with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a 2″ gap.

Step 8

Measure the circumference of the bowl and cut your elastic approximately 5″ shorter than the measurement.

Step 9

Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic, then thread it through the gap. Once threaded through, stitch both ends of the elastic together to secure.

Step 10

Hand stitch the opening closed, then pop the cover over your bowl.

Step 11

Make these in co-ordinating fabrics that are personalised to fit your range of bowls.

This is such a quick and easy project, so we can’t wait to see how you all recreate it! Make sure you share any photos of your fabric bowl covers with us on Facebook UKFacebook USA,  TwitterInstagram UKInstagram USPinterest UK or Pinterest US using the hashtag #crafterscompanion.
