Easy dog lead

Crafter's Companion – 28/03/20

We’ve been sharing lots of lovely dog-themed projects lately, like the dog bone accessory bag and the reversible bandana, so to complete the set, it’s only right that you create the matching lead! Once you’ve got the whole set, you’ll be walking your furry friend with pride!

This project is so easy to follow and recreate, and it only uses three materials. Whilst it’s only a short and simple project, it’s a whole lot of of fun and it’s perfect for personalising. You could embroider your pooch’s name on to the lead or use colours that flatter their coat.

You will need:

  • Three fat quarters
  • Prym Snap Hook 25mm x 45mm
  • One D ring (optional – use to attach accessory)

Cutting instructions:

  • Cut out 9 x rectangles – 10cm x 15cm
  • Cut tab – 9cm x 9cm

Note:

  • Use a 0.6cm (0.25″) seam allowance throughout the project
  • Finished length of the lead from top handle to snap hook is 95cm

Step 1

Sew the short edge of the rectangles together, making a long strap. Press all seams open.

Step 2

Fold lengthwise to make a crease in the middle. Bring raw edges to the centre and fold again to make the strip 1″ (25mm).

Step 3

Tuck in the ends and top stitch along both sides of the strap.

Step 4

To create the handle, measure 20cm from the top, then fold back. Sew in place by stitching a box shape and cross diagonally to ensure the lead is secure.

Step 5

Feed the lead through the snap hook and stitch box shape the same as the handle.

Step 6

To make the tab, fold the fabric in half, raw edges to the centre and fold again. Top stitch down both edges. Thread the D ring and stitch under the handle.
