Add some sparkle to your papercraft with this step-by-step guide to making origami stars

Crafter's Companion – 23/12/20

If you’ve always been tempted to try out the elegant art of origami this step-by-step guide takes out all of the complexities so you can pick up a new papercraft skill with ease.

The simple instructions below will help you create a stunning origami star, which can be turned into a twinkling garland.

We’ve used Sara Signature Glittering Snowflakes paper to give the gardland a crisp, wintery feel – but the beauty of this design is that you can use any pattern or colour to fill your world with origami stars all year round!

You Will Need:

Step One

Fold a piece of paper in half. With the fold at the bottom, bring the bottom right corner up to the centre to make a diagonal fold. Open the diagonal fold out and repeat from the top right corner. Turn your piece of paper over and keeping the fold at the bottom, bring the opposite top corner to the centre of the cross fold you have created.

Take a look at the images below to help you through this step.

Step Two

Fold the centre piece out so it is level with the edge of the fold and forms a kite shape. Next, fold the opposite bottom edge up so that it joins the left-hand edge of the kite shape. Turn your paper over and fold in half lengthways. Cut along the top edge and discard the top half.

Take a look at the images below to help you through this step.

Step Three

Fold out your paper and you can see you have created a pentagon shape. Making sure the patterned side of the paper is facing down, re-fold all of the folds of each of the five points. Next fold the flat base of the pentagon edge up so that the points intersect with the diagonal folds and the centre score line is level. Repeat this process for all five sides of the pentagon.

Next, fold one edge in to the centre point and and bring bottom fold up. At same time move the point to the left and squash to fold.  For best results, put your finger inside the corner to ease into the right shape. Repeat on all five sides.

Take a look at the images below to help you through this step.

Step Four

Pinch each point and bring together in centre as in the first image below.  Give everything a good crease to reinforce the folds. Turn your star over and fold the edge of each point to the centre before giving them a good crease as shown in the third image below.  Bring all together in centre and crease well.

And you’ve made your first origami star! Now all you need to do is make as many as you’d like, punch a hole in the top and thread ribbon through to create your garland!
