Crafter's Companion – 02/12/22

Give cards that stand out from the crowd, quite literally, by making your own pop-up cards! These interactive cards are sure to give birthdays, celebrations and anniversaries an extra pop of joy!

And, they’re actually quite easy to make! Just follow our simple how to guide to get started in making your own pop-up cards. We’ve used the Gemini Pop-Up collection to create this card that reveals a beautiful, customised, bouquet when opened.

You will need:

Step-by-step instructions:

How to craft a pop-out vase:

  • Take a piece of coloured card and the outer die from the Pretty Vase set. Run through your die-cutting machine.
  • Take one of the patterned dies from the pretty vase set, lay over one of the panels of your die-cut piece and run through your die-cutting machine.
  • Repeat with the other two panels.
  • Repeat step one and two to create a second vase piece, with one patterned panel as shown.
  • Fold and burnish the score lines on both vase pieces.
  • Cut two more outer die shapes from card in a contrasting colour.
  • Trim down each panel to be slightly smaller than the score lines.
  • Layer the trimmed pieces behind the decorated die-cut panels as shown.
  • Use a glue tape pen to add a line of adhesive to side tab of each piece.
  • Attach the two pieces to create a full hexagon as shown.

Building the pop-up card:

  • Cut a piece of Multi Purpose Card to measure 10″ x 7″.
  • Score at the 5″ line.
  • Fold down the score line, creating a 5″ x 7″ card blank.
  • Cut two pieces of coloured card to measure 4 3/4″ x 6 3/4″.
  • Cut two pieces of patterned paper to measure 4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.
  • Layer the pieces onto each side of your card blank to create mats and layers.
  • Take your hexagonal vase piece and fold it flat.
  • Lay onto the center of your card, making sure the blank panels are facing the card.
  • Line up with the centre fold and bottom edge of the card and secure one of the blank panels in place.
  • Secure the second blank panel in place on the other side of the centre fold.
  • This will create a vase that pops out when the card is opened!
  • Use the small rectangular die from the Pretty Vase set to cut out three shapes.
  • Fold the score lines on each piece as shown.
  • Attach the three pieces together to create one Y shape as shown.
  • Attach the Y shape inside the vase as shown.

Adding Decorations:

  • Choose flowers from the Delightful Bouquet set and die-cut from Neenah card.
  • Colour your flowers and stems using Spectrum Noir TriBlend Markers.
  • Cut out strips of acetate and attach to the inside of your vase.
  • Create a range of heights to create a natural, bouquet effect.
  • Attach the flowers to the acetate strips to arrange your floral display.
  • Be careful with the placement of your flowers, you need to make sure the card will fold flat.
