How to make decoupage bottles with Sara on Morning Live

  1. Read time: 2 minutes

Transform an ordinary bottle into a stunning piece of art with this decoupage technique! It's an easy way to make a beautifully decorated bottle, perfect for gifting or adding a touch of elegance to your home décor.
As seen on Morning Live with Sara Davies, it's so easy to do and you only need a few crafty items!
What you'll need:
1. A bottle
2. Patterned paper napkins
3. White gesso
Step-by-step guide:
1. Make sure the bottle is clean before applying two layers of white gesso, allowing the paint to dry in between the layers.
It's totally up to you if you'd like to paint over the label or not! if you want the label on show, just mask it off with low-tack tape to make it easier to avoid.
2. Take your patterned paper napkin, choose an element you would like to add to the bottle, and cut it out.
3. Carefully separate the layers of the napkin so you are left with just the patterned piece.
4. Add a thin layer of glue onto the bottle where you would like the piece to go, carefully put the napkin in place, add some more glue to your brush and gently apply over the top of the napkin.
To avoid any tearing of the paper start in the middle of the piece and work you way out this will also make sure the edges are stuck down completely.
Top tip: You only want to paint the glue on in one direction not a back and forth otherwise the paper will gather and will likely tear.
5. Continue this technique until you’re happy with how the bottle looks.
6. You can add optional little extras as finishing touches. Paint on some more glue, and once it's gone tacky, apply some gilding flakes. Then buff off any excess. You can also draw on some extra little designs with a metallic pen, just like I have.
7. Display your bottle! Why not add some fairy lights inside for a lovely subtly glow?
